1. Fixed Windows
Fixed windows don't open and are essentially a glass walls. However, they are a great option in terms of energy efficiency. They are airtight and are a great way to prettify your space. It is a great addition for areas that don't require ventilation but could use a bit of natural light and general outdoorsiness.
2. Hinged Windows (Awning, Casement and Hopper)
Hinged windows combine functionality and energy efficiency. You can open them, but they come with mechanism to shut them tight just as easily. They make a solid case over sliding windows as the hinged ones press firmly against the frame. Whereas in sliding windows, there is a slight gap between the panels. It doesn't sound like much but can bring significant changes to the energy audit of your home.

3. ENERGY STAR Windows
The National Fenestration Rating Council rates windows based on energy performance rates, and they award a blue ENERGY STAR sticker to most energy efficient windows. It is easy to figure out the rest from here but do keep in mind that these ratings are influenced by local geography and climate. So, a window that holds up well against the brutal LA heat is probably not going to amount to much in Chicago's chill.
4. Multi-layer Insulated Windows
For the longest time, single pane windows were used but then some people realized that adding a second pane of glass is going to do decent things for the insulation. Forgoing the jargon, it is energy efficiency and keeps in heat of the house. Today companies have move way past double paned windows, they have even started adding a certain insulating gas.
5. Low Emission Windows
A low emissivity coating on the glass (known among the hip fenestration community as Low-E windows) is very effective in boosting the window's thermal performance. Low-E glass blocks ultraviolet and infrared and allows in visible light. Blocking infrared, means your windows will keep out the heat. Houses in warmer climates benefit hugely from this even though Low-E windows aren't the best fit for colder regions since they just reflect the outside heat back instead of letting it in.
